Education and/or Experience


  • Two to four year degree in agronomy, horticulture, plant sciences
  • One or more years of progressive golf course management experience


Job Summary (Essential Function)


  • The assistant golf course superintendent reports directly to the golf course superintendent. Under the superintendent's guidance, the assistant superintendent directs and participates in the practices and management of all areas of the golf course. He or she will assist in the direction of the staff and employees, and also completes related work as required. The assistant superintendent may serve in the superintendent's capacity during his/her absence


Job Knowledge, Core Competencies and Expectations


  • Assists in planning and supervising the management practices of greens, tees, fairways and all other areas of the golf course; schedules work and supervises the employees and the use of the equipment
  • Must have an advanced knowledge and experience of golf course operations, equipment, fertilization/chemical application, and personal management
  • Highly motivated, team oriented individual that has the ability to work well with others, including but not limited to multi-cultural staff members
  • Demonstrates strong problem solving and multi-tasking skills, personal skills, and a passion for golf course advancement
  • Required to work variety of shifts as needed that include nights, weekends and/or holidays


Job Tasks/Duties


  • Fertilizer and Chemical understanding including applications and recording
  • Assist in daily course operations (mowing, spraying, fertilizing, hand-watering, etc...
  • Calibrations of sprayer and spreader equipment
  • Ability to diagnose turfgrass disease and nutrient deficiencies
  • Eye for detail and daily course presentation
  • Programs and operates the irrigation control systems in accordance to Superintendents guidelines in addition to repairing the irrigation system, pipes, and irrigation heads as needed
  • Track inventory and usage of pesticides, fertilizers and ordering and purchasing of products
  • Maintains compliance with all local, State and Federal laws pertaining to chemical storage, handling, applications and disposal
  • Assist in developing a successful agronomic plan
  • Assist in budgeting and forecasting including capital and project planning
  • Detailed administrative expectations and organization
  • Conduct monthly safety meetings with crew
  • Demonstrate flexibility and professionalism with members and guests
  • Mechanical understanding of equipment and operation
  • Supervises a small labor force for special projects, and performs other managerial duties as directed by the Superintendent


Licenses and Special Requirements:

  • Valid driver's license
  • GCSAA Class C member
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Florida pesticide license within 90 days


Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Frequent lifting (70 lbs or more), bending, climbing, stooping and pulling
  • Frequent repetitive motions
  • Continuous standing and fast past walking
  • Will need to use applicable personal protective equipment, such as a respirator, gloves, earplugs, eye guards/visors, boots and hat for certain tasks and chemical applications
